Barns of the Palouse

The barns are pen & ink sketches done on location.

The old Palouse barns are rapidly disappearing. Most of the barns in this series date back to the early 1900s, and many are no longer standing. The series is a conscious effort to depict the variety of architectural styles and construciton techniques used to build the barns. My goal was to capture these while they still stood; the barn series lives on as a reminder of the family farms that made the Palouse what it is today.

Leonard Round Barn
The George Leonard Barn on the old Pullman-Moscow road was built in 1917 by Mr. Leonard's father. It's design was taken from an illustration in an Ohio equipment catalog. As one of the few remaining round barns in the state, it is one of the area's most prized inclusions on the Washington State Registry for Historic Preservation.
